5.5.2.2 How to obtain Card IP-Addresses using the SPICE3Config Tool

The SP-ICE-3 Card supports dual-stack operation with both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.

Furthermore, the card implements a variant of the UPnP Discovery mechanism using the Simple Service Discovery Protocol ("SSDP").

  • We can use the SP-ICE-3 Configuration Tool (SPICE3Config.exe) to discover the addresses (and Serial Numbers) of all the cards which are connected directly or indirectly to our Host-PC.

  • If UPnP Discovery is not available on the Host-PC, we can use the Configuration Tool's alternative PING-based mechanism to discover internally installed or peer-to-peer connected cards, whose Serial Numbers fall within a known (or supposed) range.

    Note  Note

The PING-based method is not suitable for discovering cards installed externally on a DHCP-enabled network, since the IPv4 addresses of such cards cannot be predicted from the cards' Serial Numbers.

How to use SP-ICE-3 Configuration Tool (SPICE3Config.exe) to obtain a card's address via SSDP.

Procedure

  1. Make sure the card has been installed according to one of the Installation Procedures.

Also ensure that both card and Host-PC are powered up, and that you are logged in on the Host-PC.

  2. From the Start Menu on the Host-PC, start the SP-ICE-3 Configuration Tool (SPICE3Config.exe).

  3. Click the Discover button, and wait for the discovery process to finish, which takes about 10 seconds.

  4. Expand the Select Card drop-down list of cards and addresses, and click on the appropriate item so it appears in the Select Card text-box, but do not click Connect.

  5. Copy just the IPv4 or IPv6 address from the Select Card text-box (i.e. the part after SP3#####: ).

  6. Paste the address somewhere useful.

Procedure:

  1. Make sure the card has been installed according to either 5.1 Internal Installation or 5.3 External/Peer-to-Peer Installation.

Also ensure that both card and Host-PC are powered up, and that you are logged in on the Host-PC.

  2. From the Start Menu on the Host-PC, start the SP-ICE-3 Configuration Tool (SPICE3Config.exe) as shown above.

  3. Click the Ping button, enter a plausible range of card Serial Numbers, click Go, and wait for the discovery process to finish, which can take a few seconds, depending on the potential number of cards in the range.
