5.3 External/Peer-to-Peer Installation

The SP-ICE-3 Card may be installed externally, using a simple peer-to-peer connection to a Host-PC, independent of any other network topology.

Note  Note
  • A suitable Ethernet Cable[Note 1] must be connected between X801 Ethernet Port and one of the Host-PC's ethernet ports.

    Card installed externally/peer-to-peer.
  • When installed externally, the SP-ICE-3 Card requires a +12V 2A power supply on X200 Power Supply.

  • The card will not boot up if connected to a +5V supply!

External Installation Procedure: peer-to-peer connection to Host-PC only.

  1. Make sure that the RAYLASE GmbH SP-ICE-3 Host Software is installed on the Host-PC.

  2. Connect the SP-ICE-3 Card to a LAN port on the Host-PC using a suitable Ethernet Cable.

  3. Connect the SP-ICE-3 Card to a suitable power supply, and switch it on.

  4. If possible, observe the card's Status LEDs, and wait for the Power LED to light continuously: see 18.1 Power LED Signalling for details.

  5. If necessary, switch on the Host-PC.

  6. Check that the Host-PC identifies the connection to the card as having a HOME or WORK network-location type.

If the network-location is identified as PUBLIC, the card will not be discoverable.

To change the network type manually, please refer to 5.5.1 How to Change the Network Location identified by the Host-PC.

  7. From the Start Menu on the Host-PC, start the SP-ICE-3 Configuration Tool (SPICE3Config.exe), and click the Discover button.

  8. Wait for the discovery process to finish, which takes about 10 seconds.

  9. Check that the newly installed SP-ICE-3 Card appears in the drop-down list of available cards.

  10. Select the newly installed SP-ICE-3 Card from the drop-down list, and click the Connect button.

  11. Check that the information displayed on the various tabs is correct ( especially Serial Number and Firmware Version).

The newly installed SP-ICE-3 Card is now basically ready for use, but you will probably want to configure it to your application requirements by following the Configuration Procedures.

Manual IPv4 Address Assignment on Host-PC

If your application mandates the use of a fixed, manually assigned IPv4 Address for the Host-PC's interface to the SP-ICE-3 Card, please refer to this information concerning the IPv4 Address range used for Internal and External/Peer-to-Peer cards.

Notes
  1. The peer-to-peer connection may be made with either an ordinary Ethernet Patch Cable, or an Ethernet Cross-Over Cable: the X801 Ethernet Port detects and adapts to the cable automatically.
